Five proud children lose their ancestral home

The story opens on a sleepy October noon at Nutsgrove, a Tudor manor house that the Lefroy family has held for three hundred years. Five children run wild there. They are Robert, Pauline, Addie, Hal and little Lottie, nicknamed Goggles. Their father, Colonel Robert Lefroy, has vanished abroad and left a mountain of debt.

Their mother's sister, Aunt Jo, feeds them rabbit four days a week and weeps over the butcher's bill. She warns them that the creditors may seize the house with an hour's notice. Eight months later it happens. The furniture is sold at auction, and the house is bought by Tom Armstrong, a self-made maker of vitriol and fertilizer from the town of Kelvick.

The family faces separation. Pauline goes to rich Aunt Selina as her companion, Robert expects to sail on a ship carrying salt, and Addie plans to be a nursery governess in Birmingham. Robert sneers at the new owner as a vulgar upstart. You can see how their pride is all that the Lefroys have left.
