A railroad offers a fortune for Hobo Harry
The story opens at a campfire where four rough men have finished a meal. They speak in tramp slang, but they are Nick Carter and his assistants. The book then goes back one week to show how they came to be there.
The president of the railroad tells Nick that Hobo Harry, king of the yeggmen, directs thefts along five hundred miles of track. Eight men have been arrested, and each confessed to being Hobo Harry. After every arrest the robberies grew worse. The board offers fifty thousand dollars if Nick finds the real chief and proves who he is.
Nick accepts on his own terms. He sets no deadline, and nobody is to contact him. He tells his helpers they must live as hoboes and stay in character even if arrested. Nick wins by becoming the role completely.
That’s 1 of 11 key points.
