A Study in Scarlet, Part 2: The Land of the Saints, Chapter 7 summary

Part 2: The Land of the Saints, Chapter 7 of 14 · 8 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 7, Jefferson Hope dies in his cell, and Sherlock Holmes explains how physical clues and a telegram lead him to identify and capture the murderer. A newspaper credits Lestrade and Gregson instead, prompting the narrator to promise a public account based on his journal.

What happens

  1. Hope’s aneurysm bursts during the night after his capture, so the witnesses do not need to testify on Thursday.
  2. Holmes explains backward reasoning and traces his deductions from cab tracks, footprints, the body, blood, and the ring.
  3. A reply from Cleveland identifies Hope as Drebber’s former rival in love and confirms his presence in Europe.
  4. Holmes explains why he seeks a cabdriver and sends his street detectives to London’s cab proprietors.
  5. The narrator offers to publish the case, but the Echo credits Lestrade and Gregson with the capture.
  6. The narrator promises to make the facts in his journal public.
