A Study in Scarlet, Chapter 3 summary

Chapter 3 of 14 · Part 1 · 15 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 3, Sherlock Holmes answers Tobias Gregson’s request to examine Enoch J. Drebber’s unexplained death in an empty house, where blood, a wedding ring, and writing on a wall complicate the investigation. After inspecting the grounds and room, Holmes identifies poison as the cause, describes the suspected murderer, and sets out to question the constable who discovers the body.

What happens

  1. Holmes and the Doctor travel to Lauriston Gardens, where Holmes examines the surroundings before entering the house.
  2. Holmes examines Drebber’s unwounded body, and a woman’s wedding ring falls to the floor when men remove it.
  3. Gregson lists Drebber’s possessions, including letters and a book connecting him with Joseph Stangerson.
  4. Lestrade discovers Rache written on the wall and interprets it as an unfinished woman’s name, while Holmes makes a detailed examination.
  5. Holmes describes a male murderer, names poison as the cause of death, translates Rache as revenge, and leaves to question John Rance.
