À qui s’adresse-t-il ?

You will love this book if you enjoy fireside ghost stories, haunted houses, and murder mysteries with a supernatural edge, told by Victorian voices on a stormy night.

De quoi parle ce livre ?

What would you do if a hand you do not know pushed open your bedroom door at night? A lawyer's agent sleeping alone in a shuttered Lancashire hall faces just that. It is the first of eleven ghost stories in A Stable for Nightmares.

The book is credited to J. Sheridan Le Fanu, the Irish master of the ghost story, and Sir Charles Young. Each Victorian tale starts with an ordinary person in an ordinary place, such as an inn, a railway carriage or a boarding house. Then something from beyond the grave steps in. Here you get the heart of every tale, told up to the edge of its ending. The ghosts in these pages want something, such as a crime named, a will found or a debt paid.

A hand at the door in Barwyke Hall

The book opens with Dickon the Devil, told by a lawyer sent to divide an estate in Lancashire between two elderly sisters. He reaches the black-and-white Elizabethan house of Barwyke Hall at sunset. The shuttered windows, the grassy courtyard and the cold lake with its two leaning ash trees set the mood at once.

The cheerful old bailiff, Tom Wyndsour, shows him to his rooms. On an evening walk they pass the grave of old Squire Bowes. Then a wild white figure runs past them in the dusk, laughing in fear. Tom calls him Dickon the devil and would sooner let sleeping dogs lie, but the visitor presses him.

That night the lawyer hears boxes thrown to the floor and sees candlelight on the opposite wall. Then a thick hand with a short, crooked finger pushes the door open and withdraws when he calls out. Next day Tom's red nose turns pale, for he knows whose hand it is. A grudge over land can outlast the grave.

That’s 1 of 10 key points.
