De quoi parle ce livre ?

A Muramasa Blade is a short historical tale by Louis Wertheimber, who died in 1893. It opens in Tokyo, where the author rests on the porch of an old jinrikisha man, a rickshaw puller, whose spotless hut holds nothing but quilts and a sword on two wooden pegs. The blade is a Muramasa, made by the smith Senjuin Muramasa, and the man's family has kept it for five and a half centuries. The author, a collector, asks to hear its story, and the old man begins to tell it.

The tale carries you back to the year 1322 in the province of Ise, in a land at peace that is about to break. It gives you samurai loyalty, the vendetta the Japanese call kataki-uchi, a swordsmith whom rumor links to human blood, and a sword said to have a will of its own. The author writes soon after the samurai lost their privileges, and he looks on the old ways with warmth and curiosity. You will learn why a blade could be called the soul of its owner. Let us begin with a peaceful land that is waiting for war.

A peaceful land waits for war

The story proper begins in 1322, in the reign of the Emperor Go Daigo. For the first time in memory, Japan enjoys a general peace. Farmers bring in their harvests without fear, and trade, art and learning grow. The Hojo family rules from Kamakura in the name of the Shogun, and they have even beaten back the fleet sent by Kublai Khan.

Yet the author tells us that thoughtful people know this calm cannot last. At every lord's court, horses are trained, swords and lances sharpened, and armorers work from dawn until night. The Hojo have treated the imperial family with scorn, and anger at this is spreading quietly across the land.

The scene narrows to Kuwana, the capital of Ise, and its ruler, the Duke Ono ga Sawa. He is fifty-five, stout and gouty, a lover of wine and of the sword. He rewards courage, jokes with his attendants, and still follows every contest of skill with his whole body, swaying as though he were taking part. His one weak point is his family tree. His grandfather was a peasant, but the Duke traces his line to the first Emperor and even to the gods, and no one dares smile.

The author shows how dangerous this pride can be with a story from ten years before. At a banquet, a visiting ambassador jokes about the silk ribbon on the Duke's clothes and the art of dyeing. The Duke strikes at him with his short sword and draws a few drops of blood. The ambassador keeps his head, laughs it off, and the quarrel ends. We learn that this lord is generous but fiercely quick, and that the age itself still allows such moments to pass.
