Chapter 8 of 19 · 14 min to read the chapter

In Chapter 8, Sara grieves for her father while Miss Minchin turns her into an overworked servant and separates her from the pupils. Becky quietly helps her, and Ermengarde’s secret attic visit repairs their friendship, allowing Sara to begin using imagined stories to bear her hardship again.

What happens

  1. Sara spends her first attic night grieving, frightened by darkness, wind, and the sounds of rats and mice.
  2. Miss Minchin gives Sara teaching, cleaning, and errand duties while ending her lessons and keeping her apart from the pupils.
  3. Becky offers quiet help before dawn and at night, giving Sara comfort without demanding conversation.
  4. Ermengarde’s awkward greeting wounds Sara, and each mistakes the other’s silence for rejection.
  5. Ermengarde secretly visits the attic, and the girls explain their misunderstanding and embrace.
  6. Sara imagines the attic as a prison in the Bastille, with Becky nearby, and agrees to share stories with Ermengarde.
