Résumé de Un Lear des steppes
À qui s’adresse-t-il ?
For readers who love short, precise fiction about love, pride and regret, and anyone curious about Russian country life before the revolution.
De quoi parle ce livre ?
This book gathers three long stories by Ivan Turgenev, the Russian writer who spent much of his life moving between his homeland and western Europe. Faust appeared in 1856 and Acia in 1858. A Lear of the Steppes came later, in 1870. Together they show the two sides of his art: the quiet, aching love story and the hard portrait of Russian country life.
In each tale a person faces a choice that cannot be taken back. A proud landowner gives away what he owns and learns what that costs. A man reads a poem aloud to a woman and wakens feelings neither can control. A young traveler on the Rhine hesitates before a girl who loves him. You get three small worlds, each told with clear detail and little fuss. Let us begin with the old landowner of the steppes, a man built like a bear.

A giant landowner who rules his world
A Lear of the Steppes opens among friends who are talking about people they have known. One of them says he once met a man who reminded him of King Lear, though this Lear lived on the Russian plains and had never heard of Shakespeare. The man is Kharlov, a landowner of huge size and strength, with a voice that fills a room.
Kharlov is not an educated gentleman. He is rough, proud and used to being obeyed. His servants fear him, his neighbors respect him, and he rules his estate by habit and by the weight of his own body. Turgenev takes care to show how real this power is, so that we understand what Kharlov has to lose.
He has two grown daughters, Anna and Evlampia. They live in his shadow, and the story hints early that they have long swallowed their feelings. Around the household move other figures, among them Slyotkin, who is married to Anna and watches the old man with more attention than he shows.
The opening sets the stage with few strokes. We see a house, a family and a man who thinks his word is law. We also feel that a household held together by fear can come apart quickly. The question is what will make Kharlov loosen his grip, and why he believes it is safe to do so.
That’s 1 of 6 key points.

Questions about Un Lear des steppes
What is A Lear of the Steppes about?
It is a novella about Kharlov, a powerful and proud Russian landowner who divides his property among his daughters. The tale follows how that choice changes his place in the family, in the manner of Shakespeare's King Lear.
What three stories are in this collection?
The book holds A Lear of the Steppes, Faust and Acia. The first is a hard portrait of a provincial landowner. The other two are quieter tales of love, memory and missed chances.
What is the Faust in Turgenev's story?
It is not a retelling of the Faust legend. Turgenev's story is about a man who reads Goethe's Faust to a woman who has never read fiction, and about what the poem awakens in her.
Who is Acia, and how is the name spelled?
Acia is a young Russian girl met by the narrator in a German town. Her name is also given in English as Asya. She is restless, proud and hard to read.
Is Turgenev hard to read?
No. His style is clear, calm and exact, and these stories are short. The feeling lies in small scenes, and the language is plain.
