A lonely pig keeper finds shelter in an oak

The first tale, The Talking Oak, begins in the forest of Cernas, where an enormous old oak is said to speak and to threaten anyone who rests beneath it. Emmi is a thin, timid orphan who keeps pigs for a farmer, and he hates them. One evening he strikes a young pig with his sharp crook, and the whole herd chases him through the heath.

Emmi scrambles up the oak and spends the night in its branches. In the dark he hears a voice telling him to go away, first angry and then tender. He begs the tree not to send him to the wolves, and the voice falls silent. At dawn he kisses the bark and promises never to fear it again.

When he overhears the farmer promising him a beating, he slips back to the oak. He finds a hollow in the trunk, burned out by lightning long ago, and makes it his bed beside a grumbling owl. For a child who has known only blows, a tree becomes a safe refuge.
