Gold fever fills the town of Dawson

The book opens on a black Alaskan night after the passes have closed for winter. All summer men fought their way over those trails, trampling the weak and starving their own pack animals. Now the snow has buried the bones, the rivers are frozen, and every man is trapped in the camps.

Over the silent peaks hangs a flickering red light. It marks Dawson, the one place where noise and life survive the cold. The author treats gold lust as a sickness, and the miners talk about claims the way patients talk about symptoms.

Inside the Pistol Shot, a strike has just been announced. The stoves roar and the door swings open to let in more men dusted with frost. Money flows across the bar in pinches of gold dust, and no one asks how it was earned.

The book asks what happens to kindness, faith and love where one word rules every mind. When a whole town is ruled by one desire, even good people begin to bend around it.

That’s 1 of 11 key points.
