Sobre este libro
What if the darkest secret of your identity belongs to a life before this one?
The Man with the Black Feather by Gaston Leroux brings together reincarnation, hidden identity, and the crimes of a past life. Mystery meets Gothic unease in a story that asks what the past can mean for the present—and how much a hidden history can threaten a person's sense of self.
Leroux's fiction returns to people who are not what they seem, buried guilt, and secrets that refuse to stay hidden. Here, the promise of a past life gives those concerns a strange edge. Come ready for melodrama, strong emotions, and the unsettling possibility that identity holds more than one story.

A timid stamp maker visits the Conciergerie
The story opens with a sightseeing trip. Theophrastus Longuet has just retired as a rubber-stamp manufacturer at forty-one, and he decides to see the monuments of Paris. He brings his pretty wife Marceline and his best friend Adolphe Lecamus to the old prison called the Conciergerie. The guide notes, with official gloom, that French people rarely visit anything.
Theophrastus is the timidest man in Paris and greatly admires Adolphe, who has crossed the sea. Theophrastus has only crossed the Seine. In the old torture chamber they find a dispensary with drawers labeled hops, cinnamon and senna. Theophrastus calls it more humane. Adolphe calls it less impressive.

What is The Man with the Black Feather about?
It tells of a retired Parisian rubber-stamp maker, Theophrastus Longuet, who finds a two-hundred-year-old note in his own handwriting. His friends decide he is the reincarnation of the bandit Cartouche, and the discovery upsets his marriage and his sanity.
What does the Black Feather mean in the book?
Adolphe uses it for the unchanging mark of a soul that returns, like the black feather on Darwin's pigeons. When Theophrastus has his Black Feather, the old bandit speaks, acts and steals through him.
Who was Cartouche in real life?
Louis-Dominique Cartouche was a famous eighteenth-century Parisian bandit leader. The book uses his real legend, his gang, his arrest and his punishment as background, while the reincarnation story is Leroux's invention.
