What if standing up for justice means living outside the law?
In medieval England, castles and abbeys stand amid a land of tax collectors and hungry villagers. Robin Hood finds his place beneath the trees of Sherwood Forest. A skilled archer and cheerful leader, he challenges unjust power and shares with the poor what greed takes from them.
Paul Creswick gathers old ballads and tales into an adventure of loyal friends, bold contests and narrow escapes. Little John meets Robin on a bridge where neither will yield. Will Scarlet, Friar Tuck and Alan-a-Dale join the company, while the Sheriff of Nottingham schemes to catch its leader. Wit and courage stand against his traps.

A proud boy loses his first shooting match
The story opens in 1188 in the house of Hugh Fitzooth, King's Ranger at Locksley. Hugh is a proud Saxon who lost his claim to the lands of Broadweald, and the loss has soured him. His son Robin makes poor arrows but shoots well.
A letter comes from the Norman squire George Montfichet of Gamewell. He asks that Robin visit for a year and see the great Fair at Nottingham. Hugh sends the boy off with plain advice. Rely on your bow, he says, and always be just and honest.
