About this book
On the Yorkshire moors, love binds two people together—and threatens everyone within their reach.
In Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, the orphaned Heathcliff grows up in the Earnshaw household, fiercely attached to Catherine Earnshaw. Wild and proud, Catherine feels the pull of both their bond and the comfort Edgar Linton offers. Around them, resentment and social rank turn love into a struggle over belonging, dignity, and power.
The story begins with Lockwood, a city gentleman who rents Thrushcross Grange and meets his strange landlord. Housekeeper Nelly Dean draws him into the families’ tangled past. Through her account, two houses become the centre of a feud that reaches from parents to children, while the windswept moors give every longing and grievance a harsh, haunting home.

A stranger arrives at a hostile house
The novel opens in 1801. Lockwood, a young man seeking quiet, has rented Thrushcross Grange, a comfortable house in a lonely valley. He pays a call on his landlord, Mr Heathcliff, who lives at Wuthering Heights, a farmhouse on the hilltop. The name, Lockwood explains, describes the stormy weather that batters the place.
The welcome is cold. Heathcliff is dark, gruff and plainly dislikes company, though he is dressed like a gentleman. The house is bare and rough, and the dogs are fierce. Lockwood meets a sour old servant called Joseph, who talks mostly about religion and disapproval. He also meets a rough young man named Hareton and a sharp-tongued young woman, who is Heathcliff's daughter-in-law.
