About this book
What if Earth is only the starting point for understanding life, the soul, and our place among the stars?
In Urania, French astronomer and writer Camille Flammarion turns the heavens into a journey of imagination. Urania, the ancient Greek muse of astronomy, guides the human mind beyond Earth toward distant worlds. Our small planet circles one ordinary star among countless others, and that vast scale changes how human life looks.
This science fiction story brings the science of the stars into contact with questions about the soul and what may follow death. Flammarion imagines a universe where other planets may carry other kinds of life. The journey asks readers to consider whether our place in the cosmos reaches beyond the world we know.

The universe is larger than imagination
Flammarion begins from a plain fact of astronomy. The Earth is a small planet circling one ordinary star among countless others. Light takes years to reach us from the nearest stars, and far longer from the rest. He wants the reader to feel those distances, not just read the numbers.
He was a great popularizer, and he knew that a figure like a billion means little until it is turned into a picture. So the book moves by comparisons and by imagined flights through space. The reader is asked to stop thinking of the sky as a painted ceiling and to see it as depth without end.
