About this book
Hidden loot tests a small town—and a watchful deputy may see trouble before anyone else.
In One Jump Ahead, Ray Humphreys brings together the pleasures of a Western and a crime puzzle: hidden loot, small-town lawmen, and questions of trust. Something valuable is concealed, someone wants it, and keeping the peace means working out who is honest.
The sheriff stands for order in a place where people know one another. The deputy brings another strength: attention to the small things others miss. As money tests character, the story invites you to watch people closely, follow clues, and try to stay one jump ahead yourself.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A parolee asks the sheriff for help
The story opens early at the sheriff's office in Monte Vista. Manuel Perez waits outside on his wooden leg until Sheriff Joe Cook and Deputy Shorty McKay come up the walk. He has just come out of prison on parole after three years for cattle rustling, and he wears prison clothes and a tired face.
Perez tells the lawmen he has no money, no cattle and a ruined place. He reminds the sheriff of a promise to help him once he got out. Cook has always felt pity for the one-legged rustler, and he agrees at once. He plans to telephone sheep ranchers about a job, and he gets a sworn promise from Perez to stay honest.
