About this book
What if loyalty to someone you love puts you at odds with the rules?
In A Young Mutineer, L. T. Meade brings strong feeling to a story of rebellion and growing up. The title borrows a word from the sea: a mutineer defies those in command for a cause. Here, a spirited young person's close bonds matter deeply. Loyalty pulls against obedience, and the wish for freedom raises a difficult question: what does it ask in return?
First published in 1893, this children's classic belongs to a tradition of stories that entertain while shaping character. It explores the point where high spirits begin to carry real weight. With warm family and friendship themes, Meade invites you to consider how a young rebel can stay loyal while learning to let go.

In short
A Young Mutineer is a Victorian novel by L. T. Meade, who wrote it for young readers and dedicated it to her own little girl, Hope, the real Judy. It follows a fierce, sensitive nine-year-old named Judy Merton and the one person she loves above all others, her eldest sister Hilda.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Judy keeps one room in her heart
The story opens on a mild September afternoon in Little Staunton, a Hampshire village. The church choir is practising for the Harvest Festival, and a young man in cricket whites leans in the porch listening. Along the avenue from the Rectory walk a governess named Miss Mills and her two pupils, Judy and Babs Merton. Judy is nine, dark-browed and intense. Babs is six, plump, solemn and perfectly calm.
Judy has one great passion, and it is her eldest sister, Hilda, who is eighteen and plays the church organ. Judy has been promised that if she is good she may wait for Hilda at the church, so she works at her lessons with that single thought. Babs loves Judy, but Judy only likes Babs. All her passionate love went long ago to Hilda.

What is A Young Mutineer about?
It follows nine-year-old Judy Merton, who loves her eldest sister Hilda with her whole heart. When Hilda marries the barrister Jasper Quentyns, Judy must face sharing her, and the book traces how all three grow through the change.
Why is Judy called a mutineer?
Tom Rivers, Jasper's friend, gives her the name. He says a mutineer rebels against the inevitable, meaning what cannot be avoided. Judy first dislikes the word, then begins to understand what it asks of her.
Who is Babs in A Young Mutineer?
Babs is Judy's six-year-old sister, a calm, plump child who loves all animals, even spiders and pigs. Her odd remarks bring humour, and her easy nature stands in clear contrast to Judy's stormy one.
