About this book

What if a single greeting could change the way you see the world?

In The New Life (La Vita Nuova), Dante Alighieri gathers poems inside a prose story of his love for Beatrice. It begins with a childhood meeting. Years later, her greeting brings him joy, and his longing becomes a question: what can love mean when it asks for nothing in return?

Dante tells the story behind his verses and explains how they work, inviting you close to the act of writing. A street encounter, questions from a group of ladies, and dreams of Love become parts of his inward journey. Through poetry and prose, he explores praise, grief, beauty, and devotion.

A young poet builds a book from memory

Dante is a young Florentine when he sets this book together. He does not tell his life from birth. He opens one page of his memory and copies out what he finds. Much of it is verse he has already written.

What is The New Life by Dante about?

It tells of Dante's love for a woman named Beatrice, from first sight at the age of nine through her death. Dante joins poems to short prose accounts of the moments that inspired them, and to notes on how each poem is built.

Who is Beatrice in La Vita Nuova?

Beatrice is the woman Dante loves and praises. The book gives only her first name. Tradition identifies her as Beatrice Portinari of Florence, though in the work she is also a figure of grace and humility.

Why does the number nine keep appearing in The New Life?

Dante sees Beatrice at nine, receives her greeting nine years later, and loses her on a day linked to nine. He explains that three times three makes nine, so she is a miracle rooted in the Trinity.
