About this book
What if coming home with a fortune still cannot quiet your hunger for the sea?
Robinson Crusoe has money, a home in England, and a chance to settle down. He marries, yet comfort cannot hold him. In Daniel Defoe’s The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, his nephew’s offer of a trading voyage opens the way back to sea. With Friday beside him, Crusoe returns to the island and the people he left behind.
The island now holds a small colony of Spaniards and former English mutineers. Old habits and broken agreements threaten its peace, while the rough settler Will Atkins faces tests of his own. Beyond these shores lie the Indian Ocean and the Far East. Trade draws Crusoe onward, into storms, pirates, and crews whose loyalties he cannot take for granted.

In short
What does a man do when he has everything he ever dreamed of and still cannot sit still? Robinson Crusoe is sixty-one, rich, and dreaming every night of his island.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A rich old man cannot stay home
Crusoe opens with a proverb. Deeply rooted traits persist throughout a person's life. At sixty-one he has money, a farm and young children. He has nothing left to seek. Yet his mind keeps returning to his island, and the pull clings to him like an illness. He pictures the old Spaniard, Friday's father and the wicked sailors he left behind.
His wife sees what is happening. One night she tells him she believes Providence is drawing him back. She says she cannot bear to part from him, but she will go with him rather than stand in his way. Her love calms him. He buys a farm in Bedfordshire to keep his hands busy, with ploughs, a cart, cows and sheep. Within six months he is a country gentleman, and for a while the cure works.

What is The Further Adventures of Robinson Crusoe about?
It follows Crusoe in his sixties as he returns to his island colony, then sails and travels through India, Southeast Asia, China and Siberia on a trading journey that brings him back to England.
Do I need to read Robinson Crusoe first?
It helps, because the sequel refers to Friday, the Spaniard and the mutineers. Still, Crusoe explains the past as he goes, so a reader can follow the story and the travels without any difficulty.
What happens to Friday in this book?
Friday comes back to the island with Crusoe and is reunited with his father. Later he faces danger on the voyage to Brazil. His fate is one of the saddest moments in the middle of the book.
