About this book
The ship is gone. Two open boats remain, and the shore ahead offers no promise of safety.
John Winterstraw survives the loss of the Glen Carrig, but the sea still stands between him and home. With the other men in two small boats, he faces cold, thirst and the work of staying alive. They row and drift toward a coast that offers little comfort.
In William Hope Hodgson's The Boats of the "Glen Carrig", ordinary dangers slowly give way to something stranger. Low land, eerie trees and thick growth unsettle the sailors' hard-earned knowledge. Winterstraw tells their ordeal in a careful, formal voice, as familiar routines become their strongest defence against a world they cannot understand.

In short
Picture five days in an open boat with no land in sight. The men have little food and no weapons beyond knives.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A silent mudland swallows the lost boats
On the sixth morning the survivors of the Glen Carrig reach a flat, empty coast. The boatswain leads one boat, and Josh, the eldest apprentice, leads the other, where the narrator sits. They find a creek and row upstream between banks of vile mud.
At sunset a low sobbing note rises far inland. It comes again from the right, then from up the creek, then from the sea side. The narrator blames the wind, although the air is perfectly still. Every man listens as if to the weeping of lost souls.

What is The Boats of the Glen Carrig about?
It follows survivors of a foundered ship in two lifeboats as they land on a silent coast, flee haunted trees, cross a storm and a weed-choked sea, and fight creatures on an island, led by a calm boatswain.
Who is the boatswain in The Boats of the Glen Carrig?
He is the strong, calm commander of the main lifeboat. He keeps order, shares tasks, tends wounds, and invents practical fixes, from distilling water to repairing the boat, and the narrator comes to trust him.
What are the weed men in the book?
They are white, slug-like creatures with beaked faces and tentacle clusters, living in a vast continent of weed. The book never fully explains their origin, and they fear fire, which is the crew's main defense.
