About this book
In a hidden city of gold, treasure draws Tarzan toward people who want far more than riches.
In Edgar Rice Burroughs's Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar, Tarzan returns to a lost city deep in Africa. Ancient gold and jewels promise wealth, but Opar is also a place of ritual and sacrifice. Its high priestess, La, feels a powerful pull toward Tarzan, while her duty binds her to the city she rules.
Beyond Opar, greed brings its own dangers. Werper, a Belgian officer, is ready to lie, steal and betray for wealth. Tarzan must protect those who depend on him, including his wife, Jane. With the loyal Waziri at his side, he faces threats that test his strength and cunning—and the bond between his jungle life and his life as Lord Greystoke.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A disgraced officer flees into a slaver's arms
Lieutenant Albert Werper has been sent to a lonely post in the Congo instead of facing a court martial. Six months of isolation turn his shame into hatred, and he fixes it on his captain. One evening he shoots the captain dead just as the older man reaches out a calming hand.
Werper kills a sentry at the gate and runs into the forest. Exhausted, he is found by Achmet Zek, an Arab raider of ivory and slaves. Werper lies, claims he hates his own people, and offers his skills as a soldier. Zek hates the Belgian forces that have hunted him, so he listens.
