About this book
What if the man outside the law is the one who stands up for justice?
In Sherwood Forest, Robin Hood makes a home beyond the reach of those who misuse their power. A master archer and a friend to the poor, he gathers the Merry Men around him. Bertha E. Bush's Stories of Robin Hood brings together the old English tales of his courage, loyalty, and quick wit.
The Sheriff of Nottingham keeps laying plans to catch Robin, while strangers test the outlaw's strength, skill, and humor. Rivals can become companions, and friendship matters as much as a steady bow. With Little John, Friar Tuck, and Will Scarlet among the greenwood company, these lively stories ask what justice means when the law serves the rich.

In short
Stories of Robin Hood is a small book of tales about the outlaw of Sherwood Forest, retold for young readers by Bertha E. Bush, who died in 1920.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A boy's vow to help the poor
The book opens with young Robin Hood standing beside his father. They have met a man from their old home, and the news is dreadful. Peter the Ploughman, a good neighbour, has been hanged for shooting a deer in the king's forest. Huntsmen had trampled his fields and the tax collector had taken all he owned, so he shot the deer to feed his hungry children. Then the abbot drove his widow and her little ones from their home because he wanted the land for his garden.
Robin is furious. He says that laws like these are wicked and ought to be broken. The man warns him to hush, since careless words can be overheard and men have paid for them with their lives. The Normans have conquered England and rule the Saxon common people with cruelty. The king is good, the man says, but he is always away at war, and the nobles he appoints grind the people like grain between millstones.
