About this book
A young woman faces men who mean her harm—and secrets that make survival a dangerous struggle.
In Saved from Herself, Adelaide Stirling places a young woman at the heart of a Victorian thriller filled with danger and hidden pasts. Her fight is for survival. The threat comes from men who mean her harm, while secrets give the reader reasons to question what lies beneath the surface.
The story brings together mystery, crime and romance within the Victorian tradition of popular suspense. Its appeal lies in peril, uncertainty and a heroine who must rely on her wits. For readers who like to guess, the hidden past offers a reason to keep looking beyond the danger in plain sight.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A hungry girl slips into a music hall
The story opens in a bedroom in Brompton Square. Mrs. Trelane is dressing for Lord Abbotsford, and she wants her grown daughter out of sight, because a daughter that age gives away how old her mother really is. The room smells so strongly of almonds that Ismay feels sick.
Ismay refuses the dry tea and bread the maid brings. Proud and hungry, she goes out into the November dark, rides an omnibus to Piccadilly, and buys a ticket at the Palace Theatre with most of her ten shillings. A man speaks to her rudely, and she storms off to an upper gallery. A tall, gray-eyed stranger overhears, keeps a second man away, and guesses that she has not had dinner.
