About this book

What happens when a trader learns to read the market but still cannot master his own hopes?

In Edwin Lefevre’s Reminiscences of a Stock Operator, Larry Livingston starts as a boy chalking stock prices on a board in Boston. He learns to bet in bucket shops, then moves into the larger world of Wall Street. As the stakes grow, his eye for prices faces a harder test: knowing when to act and when to wait.

Readers have long connected Livingston with the real trader Jesse Livermore. Told in Livingston’s own voice, this story follows fortunes won, lost, and rebuilt. Fear, hope, tips, and ego shape his decisions as much as the prices before him. These memories offer lessons through lived mistakes, rather than charts, formulas, or a tidy set of trading rules.

What you’ll discover

  • A boy watching prices Enter a Boston brokerage where chalking numbers becomes Livingston’s first education in markets.
  • The nerve of speculation Step inside bucket shops, where small bets sharpen his judgment and test his confidence.
  • The patience to wait Meet Mr. Partridge, called Old Turkey, whose example makes sitting still a lesson worth considering.
  • Hope against hard evidence Watch tips and ego pull Livingston away from what the prices tell him.
  • Fortunes and fresh starts Follow an uneven path through ambition, costly errors, and the work of rebuilding.

Who will love it

Investors and would-be traders, readers of business history, and anyone curious about how fear and hope move crowds will enjoy Livingston's frank voice and his vivid money stories.

In short

What would you do if you were exactly right about a coming crash and still lost every dollar you had? That happens to Larry Livingston, the trader who tells this book, and he describes it with a shrug and a lesson.

A boy learns that prices have habits

Livingston goes to work after grammar school as a quotation-board boy in a Boston brokerage office. His gift for mental arithmetic keeps him ahead of the ticker. To him the quotes are numbers that keep changing, and the changing holds his attention.

What is Reminiscences of a Stock Operator about?

It follows trader Larry Livingston from boyhood in the bucket shops of Boston to his big wins and losses on Wall Street, drawing practical lessons about timing, patience, tips, panics and the psychology of speculation.

Who is Larry Livingston based on?

The book is dedicated to Jesse Lauriston Livermore, and readers have long seen the narrator as based on him. Edwin Lefevre wrote the book, and the story is told by Livingston in the first person.

What is a bucket shop?

A bucket shop took bets on stock and commodity price moves without buying anything real. Customers used tiny margins, and the shop profited when they were wiped out. Livingston began his career beating them.
