About this book
A wealthy newcomer sets a neighbourhood talking—but can anyone see past pride, charm, and a tempting first impression?
In the English countryside, Mr. Bingley rents a house near the Bennets, a family with five unmarried daughters. Mrs. Bennet sees possibilities at once. Bingley welcomes company, but his wealthy friend Mr. Darcy keeps his distance. At the ball, pride and prejudice meet, and Elizabeth Bennet has little patience for a man so conscious of rank.
Elizabeth trusts her judgment and resists being told whom to admire or marry. Yet charming Mr. Wickham quickly wins her sympathy with his sad tale about Darcy. Meanwhile, Mr. Collins, the cousin who stands to inherit the Bennet home, seeks a wife. In Mrs. Steele MacKaye’s play, courtship raises questions about how well people know themselves and one another.

A rich bachelor arrives and Mrs. Bennet schemes
The play opens in a winter drawing room at Longbourn, in Hertfordshire. Mr. Bennet reads while Mrs. Bennet knits and talks. Her news is that Netherfield Park is let to Mr. Bingley, an unmarried man of great wealth, and she wants him married to one of her daughters.
Mr. Bennet enjoys teasing her. He offers to write Mr. Bingley a note approving his marriage to whichever girl he likes. Then comes the quiet joke. He has already called on Mr. Bingley, and she flings her arms around his neck in delight.

What is the play Pride and Prejudice about?
It follows Elizabeth Bennet and the proud Mr. Darcy as they misjudge each other over several months. Alongside their quarrel, her mother seeks rich husbands for the daughters, and a clergyman, an officer and a stern lady complicate everything.
Is this play the same as Jane Austen's novel?
It is an adaptation written for the stage by Mrs. Steele MacKaye. It keeps Austen's characters and many of her best lines but compresses the story into four acts, each set in one place, so the plot moves quickly through talk.
Who are the main characters in Pride and Prejudice?
Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy are at the center, with Jane Bennet and Mr. Bingley as a second pair. Mr. Wickham, Mr. Collins, Charlotte Lucas, Mrs. Bennet and Lady Catherine de Bourg shape their path.
