About this book
In Avonlea, neighbors know your family, your faults, and perhaps the feelings you cannot bring yourself to name.
Further Chronicles of Avonlea gathers fifteen short tales by L. M. Montgomery, set in and around a farming village on Prince Edward Island. Here, courtship moves slowly, family pride gets in the way, and old grudges linger. Shy, proud, or stubborn people struggle to say what they feel while a close community watches their business.
The collection explores village life, awkward love, sacrifice, and old wounds through small, complete stories. Loss, loneliness, and family duty give these quiet lives weight. Montgomery tells each tale with a friendly voice and an eye for the telling habit or sharp remark. For readers who want more of Anne's island world, Avonlea offers familiar ground beyond Anne herself.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Two comedies of small lies
The collection opens with two comedies about people who stretch the truth and then must live inside it. In Aunt Cynthia's Persian Cat, the sisters Sue and Ismay Meade agree to mind Fatima, a deaf, snow-white pet worth a hundred dollars. In The Materializing of Cecil, Charlotte Holmes, a forty-year-old spinster, is tired of being pitied.
Fatima disappears while Huldah Jane briefly visits the attic, and the sisters search the woods in panic. Max Irving, who has proposed to Sue eleven times, suggests buying a lookalike cat. Charlotte, cornered at the Sewing Circle by a young girl's question, claims she once had a sweetheart. She names him Cecil Fenwick, taking the surname from a newspaper advertisement for plasters.
