About this book
What if falling in love makes you question whether you exist at all?
Augusto Pérez has money, idle days, and trouble making even the smallest choice. Then he sees a young woman in the street and follows her. Eugenia Domingo del Arco gives his life a direction, but this proud piano teacher has plans of her own. His wealth cannot simply settle what happens between them.
In Mist, Miguel de Unamuno turns a comic love story into a bold inquiry into freedom, death, and identity. Augusto wonders who really directs his life. His witty friend Víctor Goti, busy writing a novel without a fixed plot, teases him about being a character. The laughter leaves an unsettling question: what makes a self real?

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A rich young man with no purpose
The story opens with Augusto Pérez stepping out of his front door and hesitating. He puts out his hand to find out whether it is raining, and he cannot decide whether to open his umbrella. This small scene tells you a great deal. Augusto is a man who lets life happen to him, and he does not yet know what he wants.
He is a young orphan with an inheritance. His mother has died, and he lives in comfort, looked after by a cook named Liduvina and her husband Domingo, who serves as his manservant. He has no job and no family to answer to. He studies a little and thinks a little, and he walks the streets of his unnamed city without any goal. His only real companion is his dog Orfeo.

What is Mist by Unamuno about?
It follows Augusto Pérez, a wealthy and aimless young man who falls in love with a piano teacher and then starts to doubt whether he is free, whether he is real, and who controls his life.
What is a nivola?
Nivola is a word Unamuno invented for this book. He wanted to escape the rules of the realistic novel, so a nivola has little description, much dialogue and thought, and an author who plays openly with the story.
When was Niebla written and published?
Unamuno published Niebla in 1914, in Spain. The story is fiction, not a true account, though it reflects his lifelong worries about identity, death and what makes a person real.
