About this book

In the furrows and hedges, a small creature lives by its ears, its legs, and its nerve.

In Mümmelmann, Hermann Löns brings you close to the animals of northern Germany’s fields, woods, and heaths. At the centre stands the hare called Mümmelmann, whose life turns on small decisions and constant watchfulness. Around him, foxes, birds, and other wild creatures feed, hide, and follow their own needs in a world of hunters and hunted.

This collection of animal tales reveals the countryside through close, patient observation. A hunter, journalist, and nature writer, Löns watches how animals move through the seasons. The hare tales and sketches of foxes and birds offer no hurried escape from the land: they invite you to linger over weather, light, sound, and the movements of wild creatures.

In short

What happens when thirty men in long boots climb off a train, armed to the teeth, and head for a snowy field? Hermann Löns opens his animal tales with exactly that scene, and he tells it from the side of the hares.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

A three-legged hare outwits the hunting line

The title tale begins with the hunters, and Löns describes them like an army. They wear long boots and jaunty hats, and they demand seats for their dogs on the train. Each man quietly doubts his neighbor's boasts. It sets the tone for the book: people are seen from outside, as loud and strange animals.

Who is Mümmelmann in the book?

Mümmelmann is an old field hare, also called Haanrich or Jans, who warns his kin about the hunt and saves a sick friend. He appears in the opening tale and again in The Hare's Twilight.

Are the animals in Mümmelmann real or invented?

The animals are real species of the German countryside, such as hares, woodcock, foxes, and hedgehogs, and they behave as such animals do. Löns gives them names, speech, and feelings to tell stories about their lives.
