About this book
In Messina, love begins with a war of words—and a lie can turn courtship into danger.
In William Shakespeare’s stage comedy Much Ado About Nothing, Don Pedro and his soldiers arrive at Leonato’s house after a war. Claudio falls for Leonato’s daughter Hero, while Beatrice and Benedick trade clever insults. Both pride themselves on avoiding marriage, but their friends see a chance to turn their sharp exchanges into love.
A masked dance and an overheard conversation give the matchmakers room to work. Yet Don John has plans of his own: he wants to spoil the happiness around him. As Hero and Claudio’s hopes face a dangerous lie, the play asks how easily people mistake what they hear for what they know.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A war ends and a merry war begins
The play opens in Messina with a letter. Leonato, the governor, learns that Don Pedro, Prince of Arragon, will arrive that night after a campaign. Hardly any gentlemen were lost, and a young Florentine named Claudio has won great honor.
Before the messenger can finish, Leonato's niece Beatrice breaks in. She asks after Signior Mountanto, her joking name for Benedick of Padua. Leonato explains that the two have a merry war between them, a battle of wits whenever they meet.
