About this book
What if falling in love makes you question whether you exist at all?
Augusto Pérez has money, idle days, and trouble making even the smallest choice. Then he sees a young woman in the street and follows her. Eugenia Domingo del Arco gives his life a direction, but this proud piano teacher has plans of her own. His wealth cannot simply settle what happens between them.
In Mist, Miguel de Unamuno turns a comic love story into a bold inquiry into freedom, death, and identity. Augusto wonders who really directs his life. His witty friend Víctor Goti, busy writing a novel without a fixed plot, teases him about being a character. The laughter leaves an unsettling question: what makes a self real?

In short

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A man lets a pair of eyes decide
The novel opens on a drizzly morning. Augusto worries less about the rain than about spoiling the elegance of his umbrella. He cannot choose a direction, so he decides to follow a dog, and when a handsome young woman passes instead, he follows her.
As he walks, his mind runs on. He mocks a boy watching an ant and a chocolate maker who rolls dough in a shop window. He does not even notice where his feet are taking him. He ends up at her door, pays the concierge five pesetas, and learns that the woman is Eugenia, a piano teacher and an orphan.

What is Mist by Unamuno about?
It follows Augusto Pérez, a rich and lonely young man who follows a pianist, falls in love with an idea of her, and finds himself drawn to almost every woman he meets, while asking who he really is.
What is a nivola?
Nivola is a word Unamuno invented so his book would not be called a novel and bound by its rules. It is built mostly from dialogue, jokes and ideas, and lets the characters talk freely.
When was Mist written?
The book appeared in 1914 in Spain. Its Spanish title is Niebla, which means fog or mist. It is a work of fiction and does not retell a true story, though it plays with the author's own ideas.
