About this book

A dinner toast becomes a sharp jab at human pride when Mark Twain takes the floor.

In Mark Twain's Speeches, the storyteller faces his audience directly. At banquets, birthday dinners, college halls and public hearings, he turns a quiet opening into a joke with a point. The collection includes “Advice to Youth,” “The Babies” and “On the Weather,” alongside tributes, toasts and arguments for causes he cares about.

Twain often makes himself the first target: the fool, the unreliable witness, the man who cannot keep a promise. But beneath the laughter lies anger at injustice and impatience with pomposity. These short speeches reveal how he entertains a room while asking harder questions about history, pride and the ways people behave.

Mark Twain's Speeches by Mark Twain, the cover

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1 of 6

A speech is a story told slowly

Twain treated a speech as a piece of storytelling, not a list of remarks. He liked to begin quietly, as if he had nothing much to say, and let the audience lean in. Then he would add detail after detail in the same calm voice until the picture became absurd. His speeches rarely announce their jokes. They let the listener find them.
