About this book

What is a good person worth in a house where charm, money and rank carry more weight?

Fanny Price leaves her crowded home in Portsmouth to grow up among the wealthy Bertrams at Mansfield Park. Shy, poor and often reminded of her place, she finds kindness in her cousin Edmund. But belonging to this family means living with expectations that leave little room for her own wishes.

When Henry and Mary Crawford arrive, their wit and charm unsettle the household. Edmund is drawn to Mary, while Fanny watches pleasures and ambitions strain the family's principles. In Jane Austen's slow, observant comedy, walks, dinners and a private play become tests of character. Fanny must decide when pleasing others costs too much.

What you’ll discover

  • A quiet kind of courage Follow Fanny as her gentleness meets demands that test her firm sense of right.
  • Charm under close scrutiny Watch Henry and Mary Crawford attract admiration while unsettling the people around them.
  • Family behind polite manners Meet relatives whose kindness, pride and interference shape Fanny's place in the house.
  • Small scenes with sharp edges Explore how a country visit or private play brings hidden tensions into view.
