About this book
What does an army prepare when it believes the final battle between light and darkness is near?
The War Scroll is a Hebrew text from the Dead Sea Scrolls, linked by scholars to the Jewish community near Qumran. It sets out a final conflict between the Sons of Light and the Sons of Darkness. According to the text, human armies and angels fight side by side. Here, hopes about the end of time take the concrete shape of ranks, weapons, and commands.
This is no ordinary war story. A battle manual meets a book of prayers as priests direct the troops, trumpets signal commands, and banners carry inscriptions. Rules govern who may fight and how the camp stays pure. Alongside these exact instructions, speeches and hymns reveal a community’s conviction that its struggle belongs to a larger cosmic conflict.

A scroll from the caves of Qumran
The War Scroll was among the first seven scrolls recovered from the caves near Qumran, on the northwest shore of the Dead Sea. It came from Cave 1. The scroll is written in Hebrew, and the large copy from Cave 1 is damaged at the bottom of its columns, so many lines are incomplete. Scholars refer to it by the code 1QM, where M stands for the Hebrew word for war.
The archaeologist and soldier Yigael Yadin published a major study of it in the early 1960s. He was struck by its military detail and compared it with the Roman army and with older Greek and Hebrew practice. Since then scholars have kept refining the picture. Most place the Cave 1 copy around the late first century BC or early first century AD. They think the work itself may have been composed or shaped earlier, in a process of editing.
