About this book

What if a sacred voice calls herself both wisdom and foolishness, the first and the last?

The Thunder, Perfect Mind is a short ancient poem spoken by a single female voice. She names herself through opposites: mother and daughter, bride and bridegroom, silence and word. Each claim unsettles the one before it. Rather than tell a story, the poem asks you to listen to a speaker who refuses any simple identity.

Its author is unknown. The poem survives in a single Coptic copy found near Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1945. Within its lines, the speaker addresses those who hear her and those who do not. Read alongside Gnostic thought, her riddles invite reflection on spiritual knowledge and the limits of dividing existence into opposites.

A lone voice survives in a buried book

The poem is the second text in Codex VI, one of thirteen leather-bound books found in a sealed jar near Nag Hammadi in Egypt. The books were copied in Coptic, the last stage of the ancient Egyptian language, in about the fourth century. Most of them are translations from Greek. Codex VI also holds other short works, including a passage adapted from Plato's Republic.
