About this book

What if knowing where you come from is the first step toward awakening?

In The Sophia of Jesus Christ, the risen Jesus appears to his followers on a mountain in Galilee. According to the text, their questions open a conversation about the origin of the universe, the nature of God, and the place of human beings within a vast spiritual world.

This early Christian dialogue presents Gnostic teachings through questions and answers. The Savior describes an unknowable God, heavenly powers called aeons, and the fall of Sophia, whose name means Wisdom. Its central concern is the soul: how it loses sight of its source, and how knowledge might awaken it.

What you’ll discover

  • Questions on the mountain Follow the disciples as they ask Jesus about existence, divine origins, and their own place.
  • God beyond every name Explore the text’s account of a highest God beyond beginnings, makers, names, and thought.
  • A cosmos of light Trace how this Gnostic teaching describes divine powers flowing outward into distinct heavenly realms.
  • Sophia and the soul Encounter the female power called Wisdom and the text’s explanation of a flawed material world.
  • Knowledge as an awakening Consider the promise, within this teaching, that understanding your origins can overcome spiritual blindness.

Who will love it

You will love this book if you enjoy early Christian texts beside the New Testament, if maps of the unseen world fascinate you, or if you ask where the soul comes from.

A dialogue on a Galilean mountain

The Sophia of Jesus Christ is a post-resurrection dialogue. The risen Christ teaches his followers in private, and they do most of the asking. The scene is a mountain in Galilee called Divination and Joy. Twelve disciples and seven women gather there with one worry. They cannot grasp the underlying reality of the universe or the plan behind it.

What is the Sophia of Jesus Christ about?

It is a dialogue in which the risen Savior answers his disciples' questions. He describes a God beyond names, the aeons of light, the figure of Sophia and her defect, and the way knowledge guides the soul back to the Father.

Who is Sophia in this text?

Sophia means Wisdom in Greek. Here she is the partner of Immortal Man and also appears as Mother of the Universe and as Pistis. Her wish to bring forth beings alone leads to the defect that shapes the lower world.

Where was the Sophia of Jesus Christ found?

The introduction recounts the discovery of thirteen codices near Nag Hammadi in Egypt in 1945. The Berlin Codex is among this reconstruction's sources. The introduction traces the work's major teachings to Gnostic sources from the early centuries of the Common Era.
