About this book
What happens when familiar biblical figures speak beyond the stories you know?
Pseudo-Philo: Biblical Antiquities is an anonymous ancient Jewish retelling of biblical history, from Adam to King Saul. It follows the ancestors, the Exodus, and the judges, adding speeches, prayers, and stories beyond the Bible. Abraham refuses to help build Babel, making faithfulness a dangerous choice.
Moses appeals to God for a people who repeatedly fail. Deborah leads and speaks with authority. Seila, Jephthah’s daughter, receives a name and a substantial voice. Through these expanded lives, the text explores a central tension: according to its account, Israel’s failures bring suffering but do not cancel God’s covenant.

One faithful man stands against the whole world
The book opens with family lists from Adam to Noah. They give names to wives, sons and daughters whom the Bible never names. After the Flood, God promises Noah that one day he will raise the dead and make a new heaven and a new earth.
The peoples gather on a plain in Babylon to build a tower and write their names on bricks. Twelve men refuse, and Abraham is one of them. They say they serve one Lord only, and they will walk into the fire before they will join the work.

What is Pseudo-Philo's Biblical Antiquities about?
It retells the story of Israel from Adam through the judges to the closing moments of King Saul's life. The author adds speeches, songs, prayers and new characters, and he keeps asking whether God will remember his people when they fail.
Why is it called Pseudo-Philo?
The book was printed in 1527 with the works of Philo of Alexandria, but its style and outlook differ from his. Its real author is unknown, so scholars use the label Pseudo-Philo to mark the mistake and the mystery.
Who is Seila in Pseudo-Philo?
Seila is the name this book gives to Jephthah's daughter, whom the Bible leaves nameless. She argues with the wise men, sings a lament in the mountains and meets her father's vow as a willing witness.
