In its opening scene, Rabbi Ishmael asks which songs and practices allow a seeker to approach the vision of the chariot and return safely. According to the text, the way passes through heavenly halls, guarded doors, and terrible dangers.

Passages about ascent sit beside hymns of praise, as the text describes a mystic joining angels before God’s throne. With no known author and no single fixed version, this fragmentary work preserves teachings given in the names of earlier rabbis. Its visions draw on Ezekiel’s chariot and belong to the mystical tradition called Hekhalot and Merkavah literature.

Inside this book

A question among sages – Begin with Rabbi Ishmael’s urgent question about approaching the chariot vision and returning in safety.

Palaces beyond guarded doors – Follow the text’s seeker through heavenly halls where each threshold brings another danger.

Songs before the throne – Encounter hymns that place the mystic beside angels in a shared act of praise.

The vision of the chariot – Explore how this mystical writing draws on Ezekiel’s vision to imagine an encounter with God.

A strange, fragmentary world – Discover a work whose differing manuscripts resist the neat shape of a single, plain story.

Perfect for readers of Jewish history, religion, and mysticism, and anyone curious about ancient visions of heaven.

Open the first page and enter a world of guarded palaces, searching questions, and songs before the throne.
