About this book
What if a prophet sees the punishment of sinners—and dares to question God’s justice?
The Greek Apocalypse of Ezra speaks in the voice of Ezra, the biblical priest and scribe, though its author is unknown. In this ancient visionary narrative, Ezra stands before God with urgent questions about sin, suffering, and the fate of human souls. He does not quietly accept what he hears.
According to the text, the archangel Michael guides Ezra through heavenly and underworld regions, where he witnesses the torments of sinners. These visions give his questions a terrible weight. Why are humans created with the capacity to sin if punishment awaits them? Ezra pleads for the guilty, bringing compassion into a stark account of judgment.

An anonymous vision under a famous name
The Greek Apocalypse of Ezra belongs to a family of ancient writings called apocalypses. The word comes from a Greek term meaning an unveiling. In such works a revered figure from Israel's past is carried beyond the ordinary world and shown hidden things, such as the heavens, the fate of the dead and the end of history.
The form grew strong in times of crisis. The Jewish people had known the fall of the First Temple, the exile in Babylon and then the weight of Rome. Each blow raised the same questions. Where is God in the midst of suffering? Apocalypses answered that the injustice of the present was not the last word.

What is the Greek Apocalypse of Ezra about?
It tells how the prophet Ezra is taken to heaven and argues with God for the sake of sinners. He then tours the punishments of Tartarus and sees paradise, and he refuses to give up his soul.
Who wrote the Greek Apocalypse of Ezra and when?
The author is unknown. The text is attributed to Ezra, who lived in the fifth century BCE, but scholars place its writing much later. Most look to the early centuries of the Common Era, though they disagree.
Is the Apocalypse of Esdras in the Bible?
It is not part of most Bibles. The communities that fixed their lists of scripture did not include it. Even so, Christians and others kept copying it as visionary and devotional literature for many centuries.
