Its first half, the Admonition, tells the group's story and calls its members to remain faithful. Here you encounter the Teacher of Righteousness, warnings against enemies, and the community's understanding of a covenant in the land of Damascus.

The second half, the Laws, turns conviction into daily practice. Sabbath observance, oaths, courts, and community order all receive close attention. Preserved in Cairo manuscripts and fragments found near the Dead Sea, this rule book and sermon survives with gaps. Even so, it offers a rare view of how religious separation shapes ordinary choices and shared life.

Inside this book

A call to faithfulness – Hear how the Admonition urges its listeners to understand their history and keep the covenant.

The Teacher of Righteousness – Encounter the leader who stands within the group's account of its own religious calling.

Warnings against three nets – Explore the text's warnings about sexual wrongdoing, wealth, and defilement of the Temple.

Conviction in daily practice – Follow detailed rules for Sabbath, oaths, and courts into the workings of community life.

A fragmentary inner view – Read a community's own words while keeping the surviving text's gaps in view.

Perfect for readers of the Dead Sea Scrolls, students of Second Temple Judaism and early Christianity, and anyone curious about strict religious communities.

Open the first page and discover how this community turns its convictions into rules for living.
