About this book
Who settles a quarrel, welcomes a repentant sinner, or makes sure a widow has enough to live on?
The Didascalia brings these questions into the heart of a third-century Christian community. This practical, sometimes stern handbook speaks as though the twelve apostles are gathered in council. Its author is unknown, likely a bishop in northern Syria, writing about the demands of worship, leadership, and daily conduct.
Here, church order means more than rules about where people sit. Bishops must judge disputes without greed, communities must support those in need, and sinners must have a path toward repentance. Sections on leadership, conflict, charity, worship, and the Hebrew scriptures reveal how the author connects authority with responsibility.

In short
The Didascalia is a handbook for running a Christian community. Its name is Greek for teaching, and its full title is the Teaching of the Apostles.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A church manual in the apostles' name
The Didascalia belongs to a type of writing called the church order. These books gather rules for worship, leadership and conduct, and they present them as the teaching of the apostles. The Didascalia is the earliest long example that survives in full. Scholars place it in the early or middle third century, and most point to Syria as its home, perhaps the region around Antioch or Aleppo.
The author never gives his name. He writes as a bishop who knows the work from the inside, and he speaks with the weight of a pastor who has seen congregations quarrel and fall apart. To give his advice authority, he casts it as the voice of the apostles meeting in Jerusalem, the council described in the Acts of the Apostles. He quotes the Old and New Testaments freely, and he leans especially on the Gospels, the letters of Paul, and the Psalms.
