Eight carry Seneca’s name; six carry Paul’s. In the exchange, Seneca admires Paul’s moral teaching but questions his style. Paul responds with warmth. Their apparent friendship brings Christian writing into conversation with Roman philosophy, with the emperor’s court close at hand.

These are apocryphal letters, not an authenticated exchange. Their author is unknown, and scholars generally place them in the fourth century, long after both men’s deaths. Read together, the letters reveal a wish to find common ground between Christianity and Roman intellectual life. References to Nero, Rome’s great fire, and the persecution of Christians give that wish a troubled setting.

Inside this book

Two names, one imagined friendship – Meet the Paul and Seneca these letters portray: respectful, curious, and eager to exchange ideas.

Great ideas, plain words – Explore Seneca’s praise of Paul’s teaching and his advice to polish its language.

Near the emperor’s court – Follow an exchange that places Christian writings within reach of Nero’s powerful circle.

Rome under strain – Encounter references to the city’s great fire and the troubles facing its Christians.

A revealing literary legend – Consider what an imagined friendship reveals about the desire to connect faith and philosophy.

Perfect for readers curious about early Christianity, Roman history, or how legends grow around famous names, who enjoy short texts with a story behind them.

Open the first page now and meet Paul and Seneca as these letters imagine them.
