Hippolytus, Clement of Alexandria, and Origen preserve accounts of his teachings. These fragments, quotations, and summaries open a window onto early Christian thought, but they also raise a question: whose account can you trust?

The collection explores a God beyond description, a world unfolding from one seed, ruling powers, suffering, and souls that may pass through more than one life. Alongside these teachings, you encounter the problem of broken evidence: scholars disagree over which reports truly reflect Basilides himself.

Inside this book

Words preserved by opponents – Explore how hostile accounts preserve teachings while making their original meaning harder to establish.

A God beyond description – Consider Hippolytus's account of a divine reality beyond even the language of being.

A world within a seed – Follow a reported vision of everything waiting within one seed, ready to unfold.

The hard question of suffering – Read words preserved by Clement that connect suffering with justice rather than chance.

The soul across lives – Examine reports of the soul's passage through more than one life, preserved by Origen.

Perfect for readers curious about early Christian diversity, Alexandria, and Gnostic thought, or anyone drawn to how historians work with broken evidence.

Open the first page and explore the surviving traces of Basilides's thought, with their questions still alive.
