About this book
How does a community find hope when its visions of the future are filled with war, hardship and judgment?
The Apocalypse of Shenoute presents an ancient Coptic vision of coming rulers, invasions and final judgment. It carries the name of Shenoute of Atripe, the strict abbot of the White Monastery in Upper Egypt. Scholars generally regard it as the work of a later writer speaking in his name.
Within its visions, the troubles of Egyptian Christians become part of a larger religious story. Angels and demons, repentance and moral discipline give suffering a spiritual frame. Valued especially in monastic settings, the text reveals how communities understand danger and sustain hope, though it stands outside the biblical canon of the major churches.

A Coptic vision under a famous name
The Apocalypse of Shenoute survives in Coptic manuscripts, and an Arabic version is also known. Coptic was the everyday and church language of Christian Egypt, written mostly in Greek letters with a few added signs. Texts like this one were copied in monasteries, where books were treasured and handed on from one generation of monks to the next.
Many scholars place the work in the period after the seventh century, when Egypt came under new rulers. The reasoning is that the events it seems to look toward match the troubles of that later age better than those of Shenoute's own day. What is the Apocalypse of Shenoute about?
It is a Coptic vision of the end times in which the monk Shenoute is shown coming rulers, hardships and divine judgment. Its purpose is to warn, comfort and encourage faithful Christians living through difficult times.
Who was Shenoute?
Shenoute of Atripe was the long-serving head of the White Monastery near Sohag in Upper Egypt. He lived in the fourth and fifth centuries and is remembered for his strict leadership and his many Coptic sermons and letters.
Did Shenoute really write the Apocalypse of Shenoute?
Most scholars think not. The work is generally seen as written later in his name, a common ancient practice called pseudepigraphy, which gave the text the authority of a respected holy man.
