About this book
Can the God who judges and the God who loves be the same?
In The Antitheses of Marcion, Marcion of Sinope places passages from the Law beside passages from the Gospel. He argues that their contrasts point to two gods: the creator described in the Hebrew Scriptures and the good Father revealed by Jesus. At stake is the bond between the Old and New Testaments.
The original work does not survive whole. This reconstruction explores its central contrasts between justice and mercy, law and grace. You encounter Marcion’s claims about Paul and Christ—and the church’s reply that one God is both just and kind. The result opens a window onto a fierce early Christian dispute.

A shipowner's dossier unsettled Rome
Marcion comes from Sinope and makes his living as a shipowner. Around the year 144 he arrives in Rome with money, a talent for organizing, and a finished theology. He gives the Roman church 200,000 sesterces. Within months the church expels him and returns every coin.
What went wrong? Marcion has brought a list of contrasts that sets the deity of Hebrew scripture against the one Jesus calls Father. He calls it the Antitheses, the oppositions. At first his hosts treat him as a possible ally. Only when the full weight of his argument becomes clear do they see that it challenges the foundations of the faith.

What is The Antitheses of Marcion about?
It sets passages and teachings of the Old Testament against those of the Gospels to argue that the Creator God of the Law and the Father revealed by Jesus are two different beings, one just and harsh, the other purely loving.
Who was Marcion and why was he rejected by the church?
Marcion was a shipowner from Sinope who taught in Rome around 144. The church returned his gift and expelled him, because he rejected the Old Testament as Christian scripture and taught that Jesus revealed a God unknown before him.
Does The Antitheses of Marcion still exist as an original book?
No. The original independent work is lost. Its contents are rebuilt from quotations and summaries by writers who opposed him, such as Tertullian, Irenaeus and Epiphanius, so the reconstruction rests on scholarly judgment about what he wrote.
