About this book

At Sunnybank, a collie's love means standing guard when danger comes close to home.

In Albert Payson Terhune's Further Adventures of Lad, a rough collie watches over a country home beside a lake. The Master trusts him as a partner and friend. The Mistress receives his devoted protection. Across eleven separate tales, ordinary home life brings tests of courage, patience and judgment.

Sunnybank is Lad's small kingdom, but its peace is not beyond threat. Strangers, rivals and the wild bring fresh challenges. With his mate Lady and his young son Wolf sharing his life, Lad has much to care for. These adventures explore loyalty through what a dog chooses to do, again and again.

A puppy becomes a watchdog in one night

Lad arrives at the Place, a lakeside home in North Jersey, as a young collie bought to scare off burglars. The Master expects a fierce giant and has built a kennel with a chain strong enough to hold a bull. Instead a small, bright puppy steps into a patch of sunlight on the veranda and chooses the Mistress as his own.
