About this book
What do soldiers carry from home besides their weapons? For the Black Watch, Highland tales and loyalties travel into war.
In Legends of the Black Watch; Or, Forty-Second Highlanders, James Grant follows Highland soldiers through camp, march and battle. Their story begins in Scotland’s glens, where local companies keep order and watch for raids. As the regiment moves abroad, the habits and memories of Highland life remain close.
Grant brings together regimental history, camp memories and old Highland lore in a lively collection of tales. Campaigns lead through Europe, North America and Egypt, while courage and loyalty bind the men together. His tone is openly admiring: he writes to honour these soldiers and preserve their memory, rather than offer a detached account of war.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
The Black Watch grows out of the Highlands
The regiment has its roots in the Highlands of Scotland in the early eighteenth century. Companies of local men were raised to keep order in the glens and to watch for raiding and trouble. They wore dark tartan, and that dark look is the usual explanation for the name Black Watch.
In 1739 and 1740 these companies were formed into a regular regiment of the British army. It later became known as the Forty-Second Regiment of Foot. Grant begins from this origin because it explains the character of the men. They came from clans, from small communities, and from a land where kinship and honour counted for a great deal.
