About this book

A moonlit love song turns into a joke—and the joke opens a wound.

In The Poems of Heine, Heinrich Heine gives longing a tender voice and a sharp edge. Young Sufferings and Lyrical Intermezzo gather early poems of love that goes unanswered. Their short lyrics invite you into a Romantic world, where a dreamy mood can break suddenly into humour or pain.

The Homecoming looks back on love and youth with tired eyes, while the North Sea brings cold waters into view. Beyond these groups, the collection reaches into political satire and the bitter, witty poems of Heine’s illness in Paris. He laughs at Romanticism without quite letting go of its beauty.

What you’ll discover

  • Love without an answer Meet a longing that keeps singing even when affection finds no return.
  • Dreams with a sting Feel a tender mood shift as Heine lets irony interrupt the song.
  • Rivers and cold seas Move from moonlit rivers to the North Sea, with love and memory close by.
  • A satirist in Paris Discover sharp political verse alongside the love songs of a poet far from home.
  • Wit in the darkness Encounter late poems where bitter humour and pain remain close, even through grave illness.

Who will love it

You will love this if you enjoy love songs with a sting, witty satire, ghost stories in rhyme, travel pictures, German and Jewish history, or a poet who finds humor in his own sorrow.

In short

What does a poet sound like when he laughs at his own broken heart? Heinrich Heine, who died in Paris in 1856, wrote verse that sings like a folk tune and stings like a joke.

From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1

A young lover learns to sing

The collection opens with a very young Heine writing love songs in the old German manner. A girl is praised for her eyes and cheeks, a lover pines for his distant sweetheart, and a pale flower asks to be picked. The feelings are large and the language is simple.

What is The Poems of Heine about?

It gathers Heine's complete verse, from love songs and ghost ballads to travel poems, the comic bear epic Atta Troll, the political poem Germany, A Winter Tale, and the sickbed poems of the Romancero and Latest Poems.

What is the Lore-Ley in Heine's poem?

The Lore-Ley is a maiden on a rock above the Rhine who combs her golden hair and sings so sweetly that boatmen forget the cliffs. Heine's version, in The Return Home, made her a famous figure of German legend.

Why does Heine end so many poems with a joke?

He often builds a tender mood and then breaks it with a sudden last line. The effect shows his double nature, a heart full of feeling and a mind full of mockery, and it became his best-known trick.
