About this book
What if the hardest battle is not against an army, but against an offer that sounds reasonable?
John Milton’s Paradise Regained is a short epic poem drawn from the Gospel account of Jesus’s forty days in the wilderness. It opens with baptism at the river Jordan, then follows Jesus into solitude. There, Satan prepares a contest fought not with armies, but with flattery, clever arguments and offers that test patience and purpose.
In Milton’s telling, hunger becomes an opening for temptation, and a banquet appears in the desert. Satan makes wealth, glory and power sound like paths toward good. Jesus meets him with patient thought and reason. This sequel to Paradise Lost explores obedience and redemption through a quieter struggle, asking what it means to refuse everything that might turn you from your path.

In short
What happens when the most cunning being in the universe sets out to break one hungry man alone in a desert? That is the question behind Paradise Regained, a short epic poem by John Milton.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A council in Hell meets a plan in Heaven
The poem opens with a claim. The poet who once sang of the lost garden now sings of Paradise restored, won by one man's steady obedience under every kind of test. This Eden is not a place of trees and rivers. It is raised in the barren wilderness, in the person who refuses to fall.
The story starts at the river Jordan. Jesus of Nazareth comes to be baptized among the crowds John the Baptist has called. Heaven opens, a dove descends, and a voice names him the beloved Son. Satan is in the crowd, and the voice nearly stuns him. He stares with envy and rage, then flies off.

What is Paradise Regained about?
It tells of the forty days Jesus spends in the wilderness after his baptism, where Satan tests him with hunger, wealth, glory, kingdoms and learning. Jesus answers each offer and shows how obedience wins what disobedience lost.
How is Paradise Regained connected to Paradise Lost?
It is Milton's companion poem. Paradise Lost tells how Adam and Eve lose Eden through disobedience, and Paradise Regained tells how one man's steady obedience begins to win it back. Satan appears in both.
Is Paradise Regained a true story?
It is a poem built on a short account in the gospels of Jesus tested in the desert. Milton adds speeches, councils in the air, scenes in Heaven, and detailed visions. He wrote it in the seventeenth century.
