About this book
Before he becomes Arsène Lupin, a young thief must learn how easily desire can cloud a clever mind.
Calling himself Raoul d'Andrésy, the young Arsène Lupin falls in love with Clarisse d'Étigues. He has nerve and confidence, but little standing with her father. When Raoul secretly watches the older man and his associates, he discovers a hunt for hidden wealth—and a captive woman whose life is in danger.
Raoul intervenes, entering a contest where treasure clues and dangerous attachments test his judgment. Clarisse offers affection without schemes. Joséphine Balsamo, the alluring Countess of Cagliostro, presents a very different challenge. With the determined Beaumagnan among the treasure seekers, Raoul needs more than daring to navigate their rivalries and protect his loyalties.

In short
Why would a young man break into a baron's study at three in the morning, then spy on a murder plot from a ledge in a tower? Memoirs of Arsène Lupin, by Maurice Leblanc, tells how a twenty-year-old called Ralph d'Andresy stumbles into a war over a medieval treasure and falls for a woman said to be Cagliostro's daughter.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
A burglar finds a letter about murder
The story opens on a night in Normandy. A young man named Ralph d'Andresy leaves his bicycle behind a bank and slips into the château of Baron d'Etigues with two keys. He wants to know why the Baron and his noble friends keep leaving for strange shooting parties.
In a secret drawer of the Baron's desk he finds a letter written in code. Read between its padding, it describes a plan to trap an enemy woman, hold a tribunal over her, and silence her for good. Ralph has asked for the Baron's daughter Clarice in marriage and been thrown out, so he sees a chance to gain a hold over the old man.
