About this book
What do you really mean when you say something is probable?
In The Logic of Chance, John Venn takes a familiar word and asks what holds it up. Does probability describe how strongly you believe something, or a pattern in events? His answer starts with a series: a long run of similar events, rather than one isolated case.
Venn follows that idea into statistics, insurance, science and everyday judgment. He explores how unpredictable outcomes can form steady patterns, and where those patterns stop being reliable. Most of his argument unfolds in words, not mathematics, as he challenges rival views and asks how evidence should guide a decision.
What you’ll discover
- Patterns beneath uncertain outcomes Explore how a steady series can emerge from individual events that remain unpredictable.
- Belief put to the test Follow Venn’s challenge to the idea that probability simply measures how strongly someone believes.
- When statistics deserve trust See why the stability of a series matters before you rely on its patterns.
- The leap to one case Consider the judgment involved when a long run must guide one particular decision.
- Witnesses and uncertain evidence Examine attempts to weigh testimony against the apparent unlikelihood of what a witness reports.
Who will love it
For readers who love asking what familiar words really mean, and anyone curious about the roots of statistics, scientific reasoning and the meaning of probability.

In short
The Logic of Chance is a treatise on probability by John Venn, the English logician who taught at Cambridge. He first published it in 1866 and revised it in later editions.
From the 15-minute summary · Key idea 1
Probability belongs to series, not single events
Venn begins by asking where probability actually lives. His answer is that it lives in a series, a long run of similar events. When we say a tossed coin has an even chance of landing heads, we are not describing one toss. We are describing what happens across a great many tosses, where heads settle near half of the total.
This is why Venn is counted as a founder of the frequency view of probability. On his account, a probability is the proportion of times an attribute shows up among the members of a series, as the series is carried on without end. The word chance names this kind of long-run regularity. A single throw has no probability of its own, except as a member of some series to which we assign it.

What is The Logic of Chance about?
It is a treatise on the meaning of probability. Venn argues that probability describes how often events occur in long series, and he uses that view to examine statistics, errors, induction, insurance, gambling and testimony.
What is the frequency theory of probability?
It holds that a probability is the proportion of times an outcome occurs in a long series of similar events. Venn gave an early and influential statement of this view in this book.
Why did Venn reject the belief view of probability?
He thought belief is a state of mind, not a feature of events in the world. He also distrusted treating ignorance as equal chances, since not knowing something is not evidence about it.
