About this book

On open water, there is no easy way out—and danger leaves little room to hide the heart.

In The Lady and the Pirate, Emerson Hough brings a lady and a pirate together in a sea adventure. Ships give chase across open water, and loyalties face a test. At the heart of this pursuit is a romance between two people who begin far apart, with danger pressing them closer.

A ship is a small world with no easy way out. That confined setting gives the lady and the pirate little distance from the risks around them. High seas pursuit, captive hearts, and the courage to reclaim what is lost frame a story where bold choices matter as much as growing affection.

A grown man is captured by boy pirates

The story opens on a summer evening on the narrator's own land. He sits beside his trout stream, hoping to catch a mosquito of the kind called Anopheles in a little glass vial, because he is collecting them. Then a high, shaky voice cries out a challenge and calls him a caitiff, an old word for a wretch. He looks up and sees a small boat half hidden among the alders.
